Architect and designer Wang Ta-Chun studied architecture at Columbia University, and although he does most of his work in China, he says he still is heavily influenced by American floor plans.

“Many Chinese architects are educated in America, and Chinese clients are often educated in the U.S., so they see the American houses and like the style,” he says. “It’s a style very similar to traditional Chinese thinking about architecture.” In keeping with the industry’s move toward green methods, Wang, who considers himself a modernist, says he is “constantly in contact with new technology in each and every project, using intelligent control systems” for lighting, heating and cooling. In fact, his firm has teamed up with the Beijing Tsinghua University Energy Research Institute to work toward “energy conservation, environmental protection and sustainable green construction.”
