Beginning this evening, New York will play host to the 13th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (XIII BEAU), on view at the Cooper Union in the exhibition "Alternativas/Alternatives." The show—which includes commercial and residential projects designed by both well-established firms like Arquitectura-G and Harquitectes and up-and-coming talents such as Abalo Alonso Arquitectos and Victor López Cotelo—marks the first time this collection of works by contemporary Spanish architects will be shown in this country. Comprising architectural models, drawings, and large-scale image displays, the exhibition highlights 22 jury-selected projects from the biennial, along with 20 short-listed works. Through these reproductions, the show aims to illustrate the breadth of Spain’s contemporary architectural practices and the ability of its architects to formulate innovative solutions to a variety of problems, including limited budgets and modest resources. Here’s a preview of "Alternativas/Alternatives," which will run through December 3 at the Cooper Union’s Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery. cooperdu
