Restaurateurs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo are pressing ahead with their culinary takeover of Los Angeles. The amiable owner-chefs of Animal and Son of a Gun, among others, recently opened their latest eatery, Jon & Vinny’s, and as one might predict, reservations are a hot ticket.

Unlike Animal—which garnered a reputation among the foodie set for its adventurous menu of offal, viscera, and other beastly bits—the offerings at Jon & Vinny’s are relatively straightforward: pizza, pastas, meatballs, and similarly tantalizing Italian fare. And unlike the tough, no-frills decor at Animal, the interior of Jon & Vinny’s is a much brighter, more cheerful affair.

Designer Jeff Guga, an alumnus of Frank Gehry’s office, wrapped the room in a crisply detailed cloak of white American oak. He deployed the same material for booths, creating a vibe that marries the sleek planarity of Scandinavian modernism with the California-cool aesthetic of Gehry’s playful plywood interiors. A contrasting floor of black vinyl tiles grounds the pale wood composition, and a series of raw porcelain sconces by ceramist Shio Kusaka adds a warm glow to the setting.

Jon & Vinny’s is open for three meals a day, seven days a week, so there are plenty of options for those who don’t have the stamina for the swinging dinner scene. Breakfast is particularly civilized and scrumptious. It’s hard to imagine a better start to the day than soft scrambled eggs with burrata or buttermilk pancakes—and there’s not a pig ear or veal brain in sight.
