In 1931, when the Empire State Building was completed, it soared 1,250 feet in the sky. Fast-forward to 2010, and the world had its next tallest building with the newly opened 2,717-foot-tall Burj Khalifa. That’s a massive leap of 1,467 feet, which, according to current vice-chair of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Tim Johnson, “is partially due to technology, and cultural ambition.” A global authority on tall buildings, Johnson explains how the recent rise of skyscrapers in China is analogous to that of the U.S. after the industrial push of the roaring ’20s. Here, Architectural Digest surveys six of the tallest skyscrapers slated for completion this year, most of which are located in China. In 2017, four of these new towers will also be among the top ten tallest buildings in the world.

Eton Place Dalian. Located in Dalian, China, this skyscraper is designed by NBBJ. The 1,257-foot-tall building is scheduled to be completed in September 2016.

Guangzhou CTF Finance Center. This mixed-use skyscraper in Guangzhou, China, will house offices, residential units, a hotel, and retail spaces on its 116 floors. The Kohn Pedersen Fox–designed building has been under construction for four years, and when complete, it will soar 1,740 feet in the sky.

Lotte World Financial Center. On the bustling streets of Seoul, South Korea, this mixed-use skyscraper designed by Baum Architects will rise 1,820 feet when it’s completed later this year.

Devised by the Middle Eastern firm National Engineering Bureau, the Marina 101 will stand 1,399 feet above Dubai when it’s finished this year. That’s just enough to beat New York City’s 432 Park Avenue (1,396 feet) to claim the crown of the world’s tallest residential building.

Located in Tianjin, China, the Goldin Finance 117 will tower some 1,959 feet in the sky when it’s completed in 2016. Designed by the Hong Kong–based firm P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd., the building will include 117 floors above the ground, while four floors will be below ground.

Ping An Finance Center 1. After six years of construction, the Kohn Pedersen Fox–designed skyscraper will become the tallest building completed in 2016. Standing 2,165 feet above the Shenzhen, China, skyline, this LEED Gold–certified mixed-use structure will be the fourth tallest building on the planet.
