Richard Meier’s architecture and interiors have long been among the most widely published in the world. Of late, headlines have zeroed in on his gleaming high-rise condominium buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Tel Aviv. But a massive new book on the firm’s output since 2004 reminds us that neither Meier, whose base is in New York, nor his partner Michael Palladino, who runs the Los Angeles office, have stopped taking commissions for single-family houses.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing light and shadow from inside a Richard Meier house. “I still get lured into doing them every year or so,” Meier says, “because the client is a friend or the site is too unique to turn down, or both. We’ll look at every residential proposal, but we pursue opportunities based on very careful analysis of the client, the site and the program. Designing a house is an extremely personal and intimate exercise.”
