SOFTlab is a New York City–based design firm that has been building a reputation for producing striking works across a variety of mediums. Whether it’s a project involving digitally fabricated, large-scale sculptures or immersive digital installations, no proposal seems too far-fetched for the studio, the 2012 winner of the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects & Designers. Which is why Behance—an online platform for creative work—asked the firm to come up with a dazzling installation for its new Fifth Avenue headquarters. And SOFTlab did not disappoint, designing a beautiful 3-D stained-glass work for the office's central staircase that casts colored light throughout the otherwise white space.

Behance’s two-level headquarters is connected by a central staircase. For the team at SOFTlab, this was the ideal location to produce an installation that spans both floors and can be seen from anywhere in the office.

The color spectrum was algorithmically generated using a computer.

At the top of the stairwell is a fixture that channels light down the installation and throughout the office space.

A close view of the design shows the materials used, which include a laser-cut mylar net and color gels.

SOFTlab used red and blue to designate the different flights.
