After three years of planning and construction, Dutch-based firm NEXT Architects has completed a striking new footbridge in Changsha, China. The undulating red structure, which won an international competition in 2013, will now offer pedestrians a variety of different routes across the fabled Dragon King Harbour River in the city’s rapidly developing New Lake District. The 607-foot-long, 79-foot-high bridge is eye-catching, symbolic, and practical; a true testament to NEXT’s forward-thinking design. The bridge—which is called The Lucky Knot—weaves the steel walkway in a form that represents ancient Chinese folk art, where a knot symbolizes luck and prosperity. Furthermore, the waving bridge (which has three paths in total) allows pedestrians to connect walkways at different heights. As such, one footpath attaches the river banks, the road, and a park (which is situated at a higher elevation from the rest).

At night The Lucky Knot does more than just act as a pathway, its illumination becomes an LED light show that will entertain even those visitors who are not walking over it. Indeed, as NEXT Architects Beijing partner Jiang Xiaofei explains, “The Lucky Knot is more than a bridge and a connection between two river banks. Its success lies in bringing cultures together, in the fusion of history, technology, art, innovation, architecture and spectacle.”
