Calling all Sherlock Holmes fans: If you've ever wondered where the sleuth's creator crafted his inventive tales, head to the annual the Salon Art + Design show at New York's Park Avenue Armory this weekend. At this year's show, luxury luggage purveyor Goyard is displaying a desk trunk made to order for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The trunk, which has never been shown before, features a table, a bookcase, a typewriter, and storage space.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's custom-made writing trunks, currently on display at the Salon Art + Design.

"In 1925, Edmond Goyard received a special order from the Scottish author and physician, one that would prove to be a technical and aesthetic challenge," says Jean-Michel Signoles, president of Goyard. "He requested a custom-made trunk that would enable him to comfortably pursue his writing on his continuous worldwide forays. The solution that emerged from Goyard’s workshops was an amazing writing trunk, which was roughly the same size and weight as an ordinary travel trunk but was capable of transforming at will into an actual writing desk."

At a time before laptops, when it was still common for well-to-do travelers to arrive with a mountain of trunks and boxes, the notion of packing an entire office into a portable case was an innovative one. Says Signoles, "The question was, how to transform a seemingly strictly static piece of furniture into a perfectly elegant and functional trunk ready to follow its owner everywhere?" After nearly a century, the trunk has arrived in New York, where it's displayed alongside an original chiffonier case also by Goyard. See them through November 14.
