Mag-Lev Audio wants to give your old vinyl collection a lift. The Slovenian company has designed what it says is the world’s first levitating turntable, a futuristic piece of functional art that brings a fresh visual element to your retro listening hobby. Described as the “turntable of the future for the medium of the past” on the company’s Kickstarter page, the sleek, minimalist device feels more at home out on display than hidden apologetically in an audio cabinet. But the real magic begins once you lower the lever and the smart turntable takes over. Support legs retract and disappear, leaving the platter spinning solidly in place thanks to a series of perfectly aligned magnets. Coupled with subtle orange lighting, the effect is mesmerizing. And while there’s no denying the wow factor as you watch your favorite album spin in the air, the levitation is more than just a parlor trick. The floating platform serves to reduce friction, using unique software and sensors to maintain a highly precise, consistent rotation. You can switch between 33.3 and 45 rpm at the touch of a button. There’s even an integrated uninterruptible power supply to ensure that if the power shuts off, the turntable gently returns to its original resting position.

Currently fast approaching its Kickstarter goal , the company expects to have this gravity-defying turntable available for delivery by 2017. So hopefully you’ll only have to wait a little while longer to give your vinyl a new spin.
