Ground was broken on the massive Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona all the way back in 1882—and it's still not finished. It was originally the project of architect Francisco Paula de Villar, but when he stepped down in 1883, the avant-garde Antonio Gaudí took over, designing an unusual basilica that merged the traditional Gothic style with the sinuous Art Nouveau. He worked on the project for four decades, and after he passed away in 1926, several architects have continued construction, working off second-hand references of Gaudí's original plans—which were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War—and incorporating some modern modifications. While the project won't be completed until 2026 (the centennial of the Catalan architect's death), the Sagrada Familia Foundation posted an animated video of what the finished cathedral will look like. We don't know about you, but we're ready to book our tickets to Barcelona for what's sure to be a momentous celebration in ten years. sagradafamiliarg
