As anyone who’s ever received a bouquet as a thank-you (or an apology) can attest, flowers can play a meaningful role in diplomacy. That’s certainly true at the White House, where arrangements enhance occasions from daily meetings in the Oval Office to important state dinners. Yesterday, the White House announced that Hedieh “Roshan” Ghaffarian has been named the new White House Chief Floral Designer, overseeing the creation of the exquisite displays.

Ghaffarian, who was born in Iran and raised in the U.S., opened the shop Flower Affairs in Los Altos, California, over 25 years ago and, since then, her elegant arrangements have become highly sought-after by San Francisco’s businesses and brides. First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement, “Roshan’s life story is a powerful reminder that the American Dream endures, and the President and I look forward to seeing her creativity flourish for White House guests to enjoy year-round.” Ghaffarian will lead the team in the White House Flower Shop and will be on hand for the China state dinner on September 25. She will officially start October 18, in time to oversee the White House’s spectacular holiday decorations.
