Thanks to a recent change in building codes, the Miami skyline is about to experience a growth spurt. Building height in the city had previously been restricted by proximity to the Miami International Airport; Federal Aviation Administration mandated that downtown towers not rise above 1,010 feet. The loosened regulations, which were announced earlier this year, give architects and developers another 39 feet to play with, the equivalent of roughly four floors.

Among the first to the arena are two 1,049-foot-tall residential high-rises by Foster + Partners in the tony Brickell neighborhood. Comprising 660 luxury condominiums, the aptly named Towers will come with 56,800 square feet of public space, offering locals a large pedestrian plaza, restaurants, shops, art galleries, and more. This news follows Foster + Partners’ first Miami venture, the Faena House , another luxury residential building that opened to much acclaim last year.

The Towers will share the title of Miami’s tallest building with five other starchitect-designed skyscrapers, including buildings by BIG, Herzog & de Meuron, and Zaha Hadid Architects. This suite of new structures will be the tallest on the East Coast outside New York City.
