When Joseph Fratesi and Thomas Wright, partners of the furniture company Atlas Industries, developed beds for the Rockwell Group–designed Roundhouse hotel in Beacon, New York, they received a gush of positive feedback that caught them by surprise. The result, says Wright, was that “we realized there was room in the world for a few more nice beds.”

Atlas decided to add the Roundhouse model to its regular collection. Now named the AB5, “it’s a modern take on the sleigh bed,” says Wright. At the same time, the company, which got its start in Brooklyn and is now based in Newburgh, New York, has introduced two additional models for stylish slumber.

The AB6 “pares the bed down to its most basic lines,” says Wright. “It’s inspired by the work of Donald Judd, but there’s also richness in the joinery.” The model features inlaid-brass mounting plates and storage drawers underneath. The AB7 has a similarly minimalist appeal; its base, formed with L-shaped wood slats, offers just enough of a footboard to keep a mattress from sliding off, and the simple headboard mounts to the wall. Notes Wright, “It makes a statement with just a few simple gestures.”

A queen-size AB5 bed costs $7,500 and a king-size is $10,000; the other models start at $5,000. All are available in walnut, cherry, white oak, maple, and lacquer; atlaseasom .
