Since its founding in 1921, housewares giant Alessi has produced thousands and thousands of products, including items by design visionaries. But not every creation makes it to the shelves: Spindly red vases by Zaha Hadid, a menorah from Achille Castiglioni, and ice cream parlor accoutrement by Giulio Iacchetti are among the many products that have been developed but never fully realized by the Italian company. A new show at Israel’s Design Museum Holon offers viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the Alessi creative process by presenting more than 50 of these almost-made products, along with preparatory sketches and conceptual objects. A collaboration between Design Museum Holon and the Alessi Museum in Omegna, Italy, the exhibition is titled “IN-Possible” and features works by such designers and architects as Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Ettore Sottsass, and Future Systems.
