The Westfield San Francisco Centre mall has a new kind of tenant: Bespoke, a 37,000-square-foot hybrid space intended as a home for local innovation, with room for retail, events, tech demonstrations, and coworking—all huddled under one roof. With more than 160 rentable desks, room for pop-up shops and events, and interactive digital walls, organizers hope Bespoke can become a hub for the city’s burgeoning retail technology community.

Developers challenged themselves to unite Bespoke’s disparate areas with a unique and specific design language. “Each environment had a very particular need,” says Chris Kitchen, the vice president of design at Westfield Corporation. Attracting new coworking clients requires a “fun and somewhat quirky” look, whereas the event and pop-up retail section needed to “operate as a blank canvas,” he says.

Consistency was key: Wood slats appear throughout, covering walls outside the event and demo zones, and running across windows in the coworking and pop-up shop areas. The entire location is sleek and minimalist, dark and light in different measures. Pewter-toned carpeting and black ceilings in the event space give way to white walls, chartreuse accents, and concrete floors in the coworking area—all united by modern wooden furniture.

It’s the small touches that make Bespoke unique: Coworkers can distract themselves from the workday with the bouldering wall or grass bocce court, complete with a vintage ball stand. The court’s wraparound bleachers serve as seats for a group presentation or standing desks. And, like any good coworking environment, the kitchen has beer on tap.
