This week Norway’s national bank unveiled the designs for new banknotes. Following an open competition, two vastly different submissions by Oslo-based graphic design firm the Metric System and architecture powerhouse Snøhetta will feature on the front and back faces, respectively, of the new Norwegian kroner, slated for circulation in 2017.

When Norges Bank called for entries inspired by Norway’s maritime culture, Snøhetta (best known stateside for its National September 11 Memorial & Museum pavilion ) put a decidedly modern spin on the theme, creating a pixelated version of national seascapes. The abstract, digitized motif was initially rejected by the competition’s jury but the bank overruled their decision, awarding Snøhetta the commission. The Metric System’s designs for the notes’ obverse are more aesthetically traditional, featuring renderings of classic Norwegian ships, lighthouses, and other ocean imagery as a tribute to the nation’s important history of fishing and seafaring trade.

All submissions will be on display at Grafill in Oslo from October 7 to 26 in an exhibition titled “Norway’s New Banknote Series: The Sea.”
