Since opening in London’s Mayfair neighborhood in 1929, the storied restaurant Quaglino’s has been a beloved haunt of English royalty, celebrities, high-flying editors, and businessmen alike. Last week the enduring establishment reopened its doors after a few months of renovations, revealing a lavish refurbishment courtesy of interior designer Russell Sage, who has given the Art Deco space a decidedly modern lift that will undoubtedly keep the glitterati coming back for more.

Through a geometric-patterned entryway, a short flight of stairs leads down to the first-floor mezzanine, where a full-service balcony bar, two luxurious private dining rooms, and an expansive lounge area overlook the restaurant below.

Dim lighting glows from vintage wall fixtures that allude to the restaurant’s 1930s beginnings, while dark, wood floors help to create a moody, speakeasy atmosphere. A diverse assortment of low seating upholstered in crushed velour and leather offers plenty of perches from which to take in the show: After hours, Quaglino’s turns into a late-night hangout, with renowned DJs and lounge-style live bands.

Down a sweeping, Art Deco staircase and underneath impressive, multipaned skylights, the 240-cover dining room reveals itself in a rich palette of reds and warm grays, with golden touches. A glowing, amber-hued cocktail bar serves as the room’s new centerpiece, where endless bottles of Champagne chill and opulent floral arrangements capture the decadence of bygone eras.

“We are thrilled to have been engaged in this special project,” Sage says, “to revisit the rich heritage of London’s Quaglino’s restaurant and breathe new life into it so that the next generation of Quaglino’s devotees can discover its special magic.”
