With such notable projects as One World Trade in New York City and the NATO headquarters in Brussels, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill , the venerable New York-based architecture firm, has built a worldwide reputation for excellence. And although its most recently completed project, a skyscraper in Beijing, isn’t as high-profile as some others, the end result is still stunning. The Beijing Greenland Center features a trapezoid-clad exterior with glass panels that, through simple formation, capture and refract daylight in the beautiful way we’ve come to expect from nearly all SOM projects.

The tower, which will house offices, apartment units, and retail space, is strategically situated in the Dawangjing business district—a northeast section of Beijing that sits halfway between the city’s historic core and international airport—allowing businesses and residents access to two major points in the city in less than 30 minutes by car (depending on traffic). The new 55-story tower is also near Beijing’s Galaxy SOHO complex, a space designed by Zaha Hadid .

The base of the building.

Rising 853 feet, the modern building was designed to consume 30 percent less energy and water than most buildings in the country. “Addressing a need for environmentally responsible, and mixed-use urban development, Beijing Greenland Center is a highly visible example of how visually striking design can also be highly flexible and sustainable,” the firm said in a statement.

The Beijing Greenland Center will not be the only design SOM has in the neighborhood. A trio of arched buildings called Poly International Plaza is slated to be completed later this year.
