To Ben Gorham, the Swede behind cult fragrance house Byredo, scent is a science. Since mixing up his first perfume—a mélange of sage, orange, and musk that recalled his father—Gorham has (with the help of assistant noses, Jérôme Epinette and Olivia Giacobetti) sculpted smells that nod to Indian weddings, Bible stories, and a 1996 photograph by Inez and Vinoodh. Now, as his brand expands to include a line of sleek, label-less leather goods and accessories, Gorham has opened his second Manhattan outpost, and largest store to date, on Wooster Street.

The new shop (which offers a respite from the summer scent of SoHo) feels something like a laboratory. Designed by Gorham with Swedish architect Christian Halleröd, the space makes use of a minimalist palette and simple materials. Floors and walls bear the mottled shimmer of Italian terrazzo, ceilings are hewn from Canadian Douglas fir, and a cube formation constructed from glass blocks dominates the interior. The furnishings—mostly of Gorham’s creation—are crafted from polished aluminum and black marble. ln addition to showcasing his fragrances and new leather goods, the sleek space will serve as a stateside studio for Gorham’s forthcoming experiments in scent.
