Brooklyn Botanic Garden has always been a place for city kids—more than 150,000 each year—to enjoy the great outdoors. This month, the New York institution debuted its majorly expanded Discovery Garden, a hands-on educational experience just for them.

The garden, designed by landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, offers a series of different habitats. Wander the Woodlands and peek into an oversize bird’s nest, or visit the Meadow, where butterflies and bees buzz around the wildflowers. Young gardeners can even plant vegetables in the Hamm Children’s Learning Courtyard.

The entire garden was devised with its little visitors in mind. “Kids are immersed in nature,” says A. Paul Seck of MVVA. “Paths are tightened, plants are lower, and boardwalks and stepping-stone log passages are scaled to their interest.”
